A Flexible Attitude It is impossible to do so much in such limited time without being able to adjust to moment to moment needs. In Wyoming, things are different. The weather interferes and teaches people to be patient. It teaches you that if you get stopped one day, that you can go another. Operating a home business is the same. Especially when the necessities of life intrude around you. You must find that delicate balance between keeping to a productive schedule, and knowing when to let it go and just do what needs done other than business. Of course, if you know ahead of time that you will need flexibility, you can plan for that in the business that you choose. But if you, like me, discover a need for it long into the building of it, you'll need to restructure to get the flexibility you need. My son was diagnosed with cancer when I had a decent business. I had to restructure. It was a difficult process, as I had to put my efforts into writing and building new things that could earn around an irregular schedule instead of house calls and regular business hours and the demands of clients on a normal schedule. The change was not the important thing. The important thing was being willing to see where the real needs were, and to make whatever adjustment was necessary. And then to be able to live day to day knowing that unpredictability could greet me again at any time. Not that life was really any more predictable before, but now I knew where the unpredictability was coming from. Be prepared to adjust, to go with what is needed most. Sometimes that will be business when you wish it were family. Sometimes it will be family when business is pressing. Being able to just go and let go can help you to succeed in spite of the changes.
