A Philosophy of Caring Caring goes beyond the obvious. You have to be able to care about your children, and care about your customers, and to understand how to balance those needs. And you have to figure out a means of demonstrating that care within the limited time available. Kindness is a huge advantage in a business, and essential in a home. Too often we think that the things that make us good parents are somehow separate from what makes us good business owners. In truth, concepts that are good go through every aspect of our lives. They say that you should not do business with friends. But I have to tell you, one of the greatest enjoyments of owning a business is making friends with your customers! Friendship forms on a foundation of respect for a job well done. Kindness and consideration in business are terrific assets. They bring customers back again and again. When you feel that someone is genuinely concerned about what is best for you, regardless of how much money they are going to make out of it, then you trust them to help you time after time. When you care about your kids too, your customers are respectful of that for the most part. Balancing a business and family is not easy, and there are no pat answers for who must do what and when. You'll have to be able to know your kids well enough to know when you can ask them to wait and when they need you now, and you'll have to know your customers well enough to know when they can be called back and when you need to remove interruptions and deal with them directly. If you care, you'll figure these things out and learn how to balance them better.
