A Willingness to Change Operating a successful business requires the ability to notice when changes are optimal, and then the ability to gracefully make those changes. Life is change. Nothing stays the same forever. And business changes with the fickle whims of society and technology. An alert professional will see signs of changes coming, and begin developing strategies to compensate. A stubborn or inattentive person will miss the signs, and end up in serious trouble before they really understand what is happening. Many a business has gone under because the owner failed to observe and plan ahead. Changes are going to come. Sometimes customer needs will change over time. Sometimes availability of products or services will change. Sometimes technology will march forward and you'll have to find a way to move with it. You cannot say, "this far and no further" if you want to stay in business. You must progress and you must evolve. The best businesses change gradually and gracefully through time, adding features that have potential to grow, phasing out ones that no longer provide a reasonable income. Good business owners pay attention. You don't have to analyze everything six ways to Sunday, but you do have to pay attention to which products are in demand, and whether they are profitable. You must notice trends in services or features and be prepared to ride the next wave - and prepare to get off before it reaches shore. You can't get stuck in a rut and refuse to move if you want your business to survive. The internet has opened up unprecidented opportunities, but it is also a fickle place. Trends and fads sweep across the world at an unheard of rate, and fizzle as fast as they rise. Solid products won't be quite as vulnerable, but changes will still be required. Life is change, and you must keep up with what is necessary for your chosen niche.
