Get Out of the Box! Creative and Practical Help for Moms who want to come home, or stay home. Sorry guys, we are not meaning to be sexist. We just figure we ought to teach what we know, and us women really don't know WHAT it feels like to be a Work at Home Dad. But if you are secure in your masculinity, we welcome you to use the information here as well! (smile please)

Cleanup

We found that having set times each day when we all cleaned things up really helped in keeping the messes from getting out of hand.

In order for our home to run smoothly, we have to clean things up at certain times. We homeschool, so this is more of an allday thing for us. It is different for families with kids in school, but you can adapt for what you need.

When the kids were in school, we had them clean their rooms before they went to school. They also stacked the breakfast dishes so they were ready to wash and we cleaned up any obvious messes.

Now, we have a little more in depth cleanup after breakfast because we are all home, and have the time for it. Plus we have to clear off the table and wipe it down so the schoolbooks don't get messy! After breakfast is the first cleanup of the day.

The kids finish their schoolwork, and then cleanup after that. Then they have reading and craft time until lunch, and things have to be put away before lunch as well. After lunch we have another cleanup, and then the kids have mostly free time to occupy themselves until dinner. They do a variety of things to stay interested and involved. Another cleanup preceeds dinner, and a major one after dinner in which the entire house gets a once over. That leaves things clean until morning.

Saturdays we do the routine vacuuming and deeper scrubbing. Daily chores and routines help us to keep the messes from getting out of control. If we skip a cleanup session or two, things get awfully scattered just in a short time. Frequent cleanups help the kids to learn to put things away, and to be responsible for their own messes.

Built in rewards through the day help to make sure the cleanup gets done. It just so happens that mid morning cleanup comes right before snack time. And late morning cleanup comes right before lunch. After dinner cleanup comes before evening entertainment, so the daily schedule helps to insure that the chores get done when they need to.

Daily routines that plan for pickup from the normal messes of life can really help to keep your home functioning well even if you have to be occupied with business part of the time.
