The Importance of Niches

Finding a niche can mean the difference between success and failure. How to find YOUR niche.

Market Postive Aspects

In every limitation, there is a strength, if one can find it. I don't have the skills to do large corporate websites, but that means that I have specialized skills in building small business sites. If I live in a small town I may have a smaller customer base, but I also have less competition. Assess what you can offer realistically, and find the strength in it.

Research and Planning

To find a niche, you need to understand how that niche is currently being filled. You can charge into it unprepared, but if you do, you may realize that the great idea you had has already been tried, and is currently a saturated market. When you plan your business venture, don't just plan what you'll do, but plan how you'll make it unique and desirable.

Competing with the World

An online business competes with the world. But it also has the world as a potential customer base. Things that would have failed 20 years ago are now possible because if there are only 100 customers in the world who want what you have, and you are the only person who sells it, you can now build a thriving business. Before the internet, that would not have been possible. The trick is to find something where you can carve out your corner and target it to a segment that is not already flooded.

Being Distinctive

You not only have to decide what to do, and which niche to target, you also have to figure out just how you will do it so that your service or product becomes more desirable than the same product or service offered by someone else. If you are able to communicate well with people, then your very personality can define your focus niche. When you choose a niche, you then tighten the focus by not just saying you offer items for this customer profile, but that you offer items for this customer profile under these circumstances. For example, I provide web services to small businesses, as do 1000s of other designers. But I work specifically with those who need special cost savings attention, and who need a designer who can educate them about the issues and choices as they go along. I have not only a niche, but a tight one.

Standards to Hold To

Other things that can define your niche are your guarantee policy, your shipping standards, your contractual terms, or your payment options. A niche can be formed around so very many things, and when people come back, it is generally because of a range of items in the shopping or educational experience.

No niche can be successful without a sterling reputation. Integrity is essential, and good policies which are honored scrupulously will help to convey that to your customers.

When Having it is not enough

A niche is not enough if you fail to convey your unique offerings to your target market. It can be very hard in some arenas, because the words that define something truly different may be the same words that everyone else is using. I say "affordable website design" and "honest work at home information", and "no scams", and "legitimate work at home reviews". But other people are saying the same things, and they are offering something quite different than what I am offering. Because I mean those terms in a different way. So I have to find other ways to get people's attention and to truly persuade them that I do offer something different.

A niche is not enough. You must differentiate yourself within that niche, and then effectively convey a message about that difference to the people you need to reach, in a way that they can identify with. You must offer a solution to their problems, and help them understand why your solution is superior.
