Finding Help from the Pros Resources for getting mentor help, financial assistance, writing a business plan, more.
Mentor Programs You can often find mentor programs through trade associations. There are also many individuals who sell mentoring services. If you use them, make sure you check them out, and get a sample of their understanding before you pay. Government Resources The SBA has many small business resources, and the government also has resources for import/export, licensing and manufacturing, and other specialized topics. The IRS has tax and hiring publications and instructions, and other government entities at all levels have additional resources for building various types of businesses. Web Resources You can find answers to just about everything online. Of course, the accuracy of those answers can vary. You'll want to validate your findings by one of the following methods: Others saying the same thing - accurate information usually has more than one source, though sometimes the public WILL miss the truth, or perpetuate a myth for selfish reasons. Disinterested motives of the writer - when everyone saying one thing has a motive, and only one person disagrees, and they DON'T have a financial motive in saying it, they just might be the one who is right. Logic and common sense. Some rules hold, always, with no exceptions. Weigh anything you hear against your common sense, and be cautious about anyone even dancing on the edge of the line. Financial Assistance The SBA is just about your best resource for financial assistance. Do NOT go searching online for loan sources! There are many scams out there where you have to pay a fee just for approval (some legit companies do this too so it is hard to tell), or where their goal is to get your financial information. Going through the SBA, or a local bank can help to protect you from being the target of fraud. Dell Financial also offers Small Business Credit for purchase of Computer equipment. The initial process takes one to three days, but is relatively simple if you have passable credit. Be careful, because the standard loan is 3 years, and some equipment will be obsolete before that term has ended, so make sure you can pay it off before you have to purchase a new system, because you won't be able to sell it for what you owe. If you need business equipment though, this can be a way to get a start with a reasonable monthly payment - make sure your business can support it, or that in worst case, that you can afford it without the business income.
