Scheduling Wisely For some people scheduling wisely means keeping an hour by hour agenda. For others it just means having a flexible routine that they work through each day. Either way, whether or not you can work within time constraints both with your family and with your work can determine whether or not you can succeed with a home business or not. Your schedule needs to accommodate the needs of your business, and the needs of your family. Much of what your family needs can be done on a routine, a few things cannot. You can get a feel for how much time you have each day to devote to business. It may mean waiting until you have help with the little ones to work, or it may mean working while the kids are in school. I work best with a flexible schedule. I know I can work while little kids are napping, or while the older ones are watching a movie. I know that in the afternoon they go out to play and I get some time. When Kevin is home, I can get in a few extra hours working while he is tending to things. And with older kids, they can often help out so I can get in time. My schedule involves getting certain things done each day though, both family and business tasks. I have to make sure that I maintain enough of a schedule to balance the needs between family and work. If I don't do that, my home falls apart, or my business dwindles. It always means that my family does not get quite all I'd like to give them. And my business never quite grows as much as it could if I gave it more time. But it works anyway, and I make enough to make it well worth the time and effort. You can use a planner, or organizer software to keep track of what you need to do, or a ToDo list. I keep a simple list in NotePad. I just add tasks at the bottom that are low priority, at the top with some symbols to catch my attention when they are urgent, and put due dates on anything that has a time limit. When a task is done I delete it. The important thing is not whether you use what I use, or whether you look super organized. The thing is to find a way to track your schedule and tasks in a way that works for you. Whatever that is, is good.
