Special Needs Coping with special needs in a family can complicate a normally simple existance. Add a business and things get more complex, but there are still ways to cope and adapt opportunities to many special circumstances. Finding the Opportunity Special Needs can often qualify a parent to do things that they would otherwise not be qualified to do. For example, a parent with limitations can offer services to other parents with similar limitations. A parent of a child with difficulties can sometimes offer services that their experiences lend unique insight into. Is there an opportunity in your circumstances that opens a window? Focus On "Can" Just as you must focus on things a person with limitations can do, you must focus on what you as a parent can do. Work at home is tricky to balance with high demand children, but it can be done. If you look at the things you can do, there is often a logical niche, or even an ideal time to work at income producing activities. Job Training There are businesses which provide unique on the job training opportunities for children with limitations. Chosen and organized carefully, a business can provide some very valuable experiences that would otherwise be overlooked. Working Around Medical Care I have had to do a lot of work in between and around medical care. I have several tactics to cope with this, and my number one piece of advice is: Get a laptop! Seriously. I can take my work with me to the hospital. Even if I can't get online, I can at least catch up with design tasks, writing, or other jobs. I keep more stuff on my hard drive than most people do - for example, I copy my clipart and photo CDs to my hard drive, and do full installs of all software that offers that option - and I have suitable accessories that let me work productively in other places. I take my son to the hospital for chemo regularly, and my laptop goes with me now. I got a rolling case for it so that I can transport my rather large laptop easily wherever I need to go, along with lunch, water, my purse, and anything else I need to pack in. The other tip is to make sure your business is flexible. I have several lines of work, some of which involve processing orders or attending to the needs of clients for web design. Those things require that I work on someone else's schedule, so my clients have to know that I have a son with cancer, and while things don't usually go wrong, they could. They are very kind about it when I do have an emergency. More and more of my income though is coming from ad supported writing. This type of income is location and schedule independent. Even if my sites get neglected for a few weeks, they still go on earning. They grow and earn better when I pay attention and keep things fresh, but they can stand being neglected better than a web design client or a customer waiting on an order. This kind of flexibility is invaluable.
